Coming Out from Underground
Experience a time when more than the buildings had facades, as we delve into Pioneer Square's
surprising past as the hotbed of LGBT life in our community. This historic area's once rowdy and run-down character
gave cover to hidden outposts (frequently bars and taverns) where being gay was 'OK' in contrast to the larger
disapproving world of the early and mid-20th century. Learn how these safe havens for one-time outcasts developed into a community that eventually sought greater social and political recognition.
This tour lasts approximately 2 hours and begins in Pioneer Square on the corner of Third Avenue S. and S. Washington St. at 10 am. Advance registration is strongly encouraged; walk-ups are limited to space available. Tour is $15 in advance/$20 day of.
